Welcome to Dan's Word Play - Memories

The first poem Grain Trucks is a memory from my youth living on the edge of glacial Lake Aggasiz to the west with the moraine of its ancient shore sloping up the ridge line to the east of town.  U.S. highway 2 ran through town carrying semi loads of grain to the port of Duluth on Lake Superior.

Dan

.

Grain Trucks

The summer window

brings the flow of sound

of the grain trucks

rolling North Dakota wheat

out of the great plains

up the long Lengby hill

to top the ridge of the moraine

benny benny

shift

benny benny

shift

up the long Lengby hill

rolling all night

from the land sea

to inland sea

to the belly of the world

rolling teats

straining against the mother

seeking a gear

to make the hill

benny benny

shift

benny benny

shift

full flowing out

empty flowing back

each straining

against the hill

for speed and restraint

benny benny

shift

benny benny

shift

full to the east

empty to the west

still rolling through my dreams

wheat hair flowing

around the grinning teeth

of flat land towns

in the ancient

glaciated face of home
